But the weak bass really was a deal breaker for me - it frustrated me every time I played it. It’s a shame, because in many other respects it’s quite excellent technically, and is one of the few VSTs with real una corda samples in addition to multiple mic perspectives that can be custom mixed. In many respects, it reminds me of the recently released VSL Fazioli which has a similarly clean, clinical tone, and also suffers from a weak, underpowered bass. I tried everything I could in terms of EQ and other settings to boost the bass, but could never get it to a satisfactory level, and ultimately ended up selling it.

However it does have one major flaw that ultimately made it a no-go for me - a weak and thin sounding bass that struggles to project over the mids and highs. Tone is definitely more on the clinical and clean side, but whether or not you like that comes down to personal preference. Maybe not quite as good as Garritan, but I would put it in the same upper tier.

I’ve had the Ravenscroft, and it’s very good playability-wise. The tonal range of the Ravenscroft 275 at the ppp-p range is pretty good with some subtle variation of tone across the dynamic range, but is definitely more of a clean and modern sounding (some may say "clinical") character which to my ears lacks the complex, bell-like tone of a well voiced Steinway or CFX at lower dynamics. The Ravenscroft 275 is a tighter "studio" type piano, with the room mics not adding much ambience other than a narrower stereo image. Playability in my opinion is pretty equal. I own both the Garritan CFX and Ravenscroft 275. If you have some experience and are able to share, please do. Since there’s no demos, I’d like as much advice and testimony before I take a plunge. I’m not necessarily a fan of the tone, but I said the same thing about Garritan, and now I like it.ĭoes it have authentic long-lasting sustain? How’s the Ravenscroft? Bad pianissimo is a make or break for me. I really like VSL’s Steinway for how it lets you create such quiet pianissimos.

Ravenscroft also has una corda and is newer.Īny testimonies on the playability? Especially in the ppp-p range, which is where most VSTs still fail to me. I’m still trying to exhaust all possibilities, though. I’m quite taken with the Garritan CFX and it’s become my main instrument because of the una corda.
